Commissioning a New Work

Things to Consider

The Ensemble:

1. What kind of accompaniment do I want?
   - a cappella, piano, organ, orchestra

2. What level of difficulty can the ensemble  handle?
   - Divisi, Range, Keys

3. What kind of "sound" is the ensemble comfortable with?
   - Traditional, Contemporary, Style:

4. In what context will this piece be performed?
   - Celebratory, Christmas, Memorial, etc.

5. Consider the length of the piece.

6. Is there a desired dedication or inscription?

Timeline:

1. When do I need this piece completed?

It is very important not to rush the composition process.  In general, a work that is a few minutes in length, a cappella or piano accompanied, can be completed in 3-6 months.  Larger works may require 12 to 18 months or more depending on the length and complexity of the piece.  Additionally, the start of this timeline will depend on the current schedule of composition.
